Vishnu Sahasranam means the thousand names of Shree Vishnu. It is narrated in the Santi Parv of Mahabharat. Bhisma Pitamah was lying on the bed of arrows waiting to leave his body at the appropriate time of his choosing. Yudhisthir accompanied by his brothers and Shree Krishna approached Bhisma Pitamah and asked him the following questions:

Human beings should worship and pray to Shree Vishnu by reciting Vishnu Sahasranam(thousand names of Shree Vishnu) which brings auspiciousness and salvation.
Which is the highest Dharma?
The highest Dharma is to worship the lotus eyed Shree Vishnu by reciting Shree Vishnu Sahasranam.
Which Jap human beings should recite to get salvation from the bondage of the cycle of

He is the one who is invoked before every oblation is poured into the fire of an Yagna.

He is the Supreme Purus(Atmas or spirits).

He is the source or creator of everything.

He is the destroyer of everything.
Om Sivah Namah
He is the one eternally pure.
Om Sthanuh Namah
One who is permanent and unchanged(like a pillar, foundation, location) during creation, maintenance and destruction. In Bhagvat Gita(9.18) Shree Krishna says that He is the Sthanam for everything.
Om Bhutadhih Namah
He is the source of all fundamental elements like Space, Air, Fire, Water, Earth, etc.
Om Nidhih-Avyayah Namah
He is the inexhaustible(Avyayah) treasure house(Nidhih) in whom everything merges into(for storage and preservation) during Pralay(dissolution) and from whom the next creation takes place. In Bhagvat Gita(9.18) Shree Krishna says that He is the Nidhanam(treasure house) for everything.
Om Sambhvh Namah
Shree Vishnu is the one who takes Avtars (incarnations) at his free will. In Bhagvat Gita(4.8) Shree Krishna says “ Dharma Sam-Sthapnarthy Sa-mbhvami yuge yuge”- for the establishment of the Dharma(righteousness) I am born(Sambhvami) in every yug(age).
Om Bhavanah Namah
Shree Vishnu is the giver of fruits of pleasure or pain according to one’s karma.
Om Bharta Namah
He is the provider for all beings.
Om Prabhavh Namah
He is the one from whom everything originates(womb of everything). In Bhagvat Gita 9-18 Shree Krishna says that He is both the Prabhavh(origin) and Pralayh(destruction) of everything.
Om Prabhuh Namah
He is the Supreme Bhagwan who has power to do anything.
Om Ishvarh Namah
He possesses unlimited powers to do anything.
Om Swayambhuh Namah
He is created by and from Himself without outside influence. In Isa Upanishad(sloak 8) He is called Swayambhuh.
Om Sambhuh Namah
He is the giver of happiness and prosperity to His devotees. Sambhuh is also the name of Bhagwan Shivji and therefore this shows that both Shree Vishnu and Shivji are different manifestations of the same ultimate divinity and are thus the same.
Om Aadityah Namah
There can be two meanings of this name:1. There are 12 golden hue Aadityas(divine persons) in the Sun’s orbit and one of them is Shree Vishnu. In Bhagvat Gita 10-21 Shree Krishna says that He is Vishnu among the Aadityas.
2. Son of Aditi or Shree Vishnu as Vaman Bhagwan.

One who is always victorious. (As tiny Vamanji He won all three worlds in three steps).

One who is armed with the divine dhanush (bow) named Sarang. In Ram avatar He carried His dhanush Sarang and therefore in Gita (10.31) He says “I am Shree Ram among the wielders of weapons.”

One who has the intelligence to understand everything. Katho Upanishad (1.3.16) says that one who recites and hears the sermon of the God of Death to Nachiket becomes Medhavi.
